THE Ministry of Small to Medium Enterprises Development will, in conjunction with the National Association of Small to Medium Enterprises, hold a national business interactive expo for SMEs this week. The expo, which is expected to attract SMEs in the production of value added goods, will run from September 21-23 under the theme "SMEs/MFIs (Microfinance Institutions), The Backbone of Sustainable Economic Recovery and Empowerment".

The Zimbabwe Association of Microfinance Institutions is assisting with the organisation of the expo. Apart from showcasing their wide range of products and services, the SMEs will have an opportunity to share business ideas with their counterparts while forging new partnerships.

"The National Association of Small to Medium Enterprises Development in conjunction with the Ministry of Small to Medium Enterprises Development will be hosting the national business interactive expo.

"All SMEs and MFIs are invited to come and showcase their products and services at this expo.

"SMEs exhibitors must be in value addition," said the ministry in a statement.

The small business sector represents the greatest area of opportunity for the development of the economy through broad-based empowerment of the low-income groups.

Over the years, the informal sector has served as a safety net for those retrenched from formal employment and school- leavers who cannot be absorbed by the formal sector.

The sector has grown to become one of the biggest employers in the country particularly at a time when formal employment is continuing to shrink.

According to some estimates at least 70 percent of Zimbabwe’s population is employed in the informal sector, one of the most vibrant in the Sadc region.
