Mubita told ZANIS in Mongu that farmers in far-flung areas were constantly being exploited by unscrupulous dealers due to lack of market for the commodity. She urged the government to intervene by setting up markets to help the poor farmers who were getting peanuts for their work.

Mubita said it would be prudent for the government to work with the established farmers associations to address the situation, which had negatively affected farmers in the district.

Mubita also appealed to farmers in Mongu not to wait for relief handouts for them to clear their canals.

She said relief handouts should be discouraged in canal clearing as the trend led to poor yields as most farmers started the process late.

Mubita said farmers needed inputs and loans to boost the agriculture industry in the district and consequently Western Province.
