(HERALD) The issue is not Cde Mugabe, but land

The issue is not Cde Mugabe, but land

EDITOR — As the countdown to the EU- Africa Summit gathers pace, with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown facing increasing isolation over his stance that he will not attend if President Mugabe is present, the lyrics from one of Zimbabwe’s sungura maestros, the late Fanuel "System" Tazvida comes to mind:

Ndiwe wakazvikanyira wega;

Ndiwe wakazvitosvora wega;

Nyaya yako yokuzviidza gamba

Ndiwe wakazvikanyira wega!

Loosely translated the lyrics go, "you are the one to blame, because you wanted to make yourself a hero".

Was System Tazvida referring to Gordon Brown? Not likely, but certainly to people as myopic as Brown.

Is Brown willing to sacrifice Africa- Europe relations because of a personal ego and because he thinks Britain’s colonial claims to Zimbabwe's major resource, land, was ad infinitum?

For the issues are not President Mugabe and the so-called human rights abuses, the issue is L-A-N-D, and it has always been land, and it will remain land.

Cde Mugabe’s unwavering stance on the land issue does not make him the issue, even by default.

The world can no longer ignore reports about the apparent crevices in the EU, a result of Brown’s stubbornness.

I hate to think of the impact of such division on Europe itself, let alone its relationship with the rest of the world.
