MMD spokesperson Benny Tetamashimba has disclosed that party members are wondering whether President Levy Mwanawasa should be nominated as a delegate to the National Constitutional Conference (NCC). In an interview, Tetamahimba said he would soon raise the issue before the MMD’s national executive committee (NEC) on whether President Mwanawasa should be nominated as an MMD delegate.
“Many have been asking that: ‘Is President Mwanawasa going to be a delegate?’” Tetamashimba said. “The NEC will meet. If it won’t be on the agenda, then I will bring it up because many have been asking.”
Tetamashimba said MMD had not yet made a decision regarding President Mwanawasa’s participation on the NCC.
However, Tetamashimba said he had told party members that he personally believed that it would not be correct for the MMD to nominate President Mwanawasa because he was a Republican President.
“I believe that President Mwanawasa will not go to the NCC on party lines because he’s above that. We are going to discuss in the NEC. People are going to ask whether he’s going to attend.
He’s a national leader and it would not be correct for MMD to nominate him,” Tetamashimba said. “Sitting (NCC sitting) will be for the whole day. Imagine President Mwanawasa sitting for the whole day. He’s supposed to wait for the recommendations from the people.”
On the parliamentary by-election in Nchanga Constituency, Tetamashimba said the district and provincial executive committees had finalised and submitted three names for adoption and Charles Chimumbwa was among them.
He said NEC would sit to look at the report.
