Patriotic Front president Michael Sata has asked the Taiwanese government to help him with US $50,000 (about K195 million) to enable him to travel to the United States on his continued mission to discredit China in favour of Taiwan. According to Sata’s letter titled, “Fight Against The People’s Republic of China Against Your Country” to Taiwan’s Ambassador to Malawi dated September 10, 2007, Sata stated that the money would be to cover costs of his travel and upkeep.
This followed Sata’s invitation by Harvard University for him to speak on human rights at a conference themed, “China-Africa: The Yin and the Yang” to be held on Wednesday at Harvard University in the US.
“When I met you in 2005, I undertook to do everything within my capacity to discredit The People’s Republic of China so that they can concentrate on defending themselves against my attacks and leave your country at
peace,” Sata’s letter to Taiwan’s Ambassador in Lilongwe read in part.
“My campaign has paid dividends. The whole world has come to acknowledge my campaign positively.
It is this positive campaign which has attracted my invitation to one of the most famous Universities in the World, Harvard University USA, which invitation you already have a copy. Harvard University has offered a one-way economy ticket from Zambia to Boston, USA.
“The above invitation is very important for the publicity of your country. I will be accompanied by my Director of Research a Dr Mulenga. Because of the importance of the above trip, I have obtained a quotation which comes to US $28,612.00 (Twenty eight thousand six and twelve dollars).
“I am therefore humbly requesting support from your government in the sum of US $50,000 (Fifty thousand dollars) to cover the cost of this important trip, upkeep in London and the USA.”
Sata further stated that if Taiwan’s government approved his request, the money could be wired into his personal account at Finance Bank’s Corporate Branch in Lusaka.
“Please accept Your Excellency, the highest assurances of the Patriotic Front,” stated Sata.
However, Sata’s itinerary shows that both his air ticket and that of Dr Chileshe Mulenga were return tickets contrary to what he stated in his letter to the Ambassador in Lilongwe. During the run-up to last year’s general elections, The Post exposed Sata’s links with the Taiwan’s government through its embassy in Lilongwe. But Sata challenged The Post and all those who alleged that he was being bankrolled by the government of Taiwan during the campaigns to prove their allegations.
During and after last year’s campaigns, Sata has consistently denounced the Chinese government and its investment in Africa in general and Zambia in particular.
And when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Zambia recently, Sata ordered his councillors not to be among those who were to welcome him at Lusaka International Airport.
However, the councillors defied this order. And as a consequence, several councillors including then mayor Susan Nakazwe were suspended from the party. The suspensions culminated into the expulsion of Nakazwe and another councillor Boniface Musonda Mwaume peace,” Sata’s letter to Taiwan’s Ambassador in Lilongwe read in part.
