THE US government yesterday launched a new command centre for its military operations in Africa called Africa Military Command (AFRICOM). According to the US' Pentagon, AFRICOM will initially be based in Germany before moving to Africa.

The US envisages that, AFRICOM would help Africans achieve their own security, not to extend the scope of the war on terrorism or secure African resources. But the whole idea has been received with mixed reaction from African leaders.

President Mwanawasa recently said he would not allow the US to set up a command post in Zambia. President Mwanawasa said there would be no military base in Zambia or the SADC region.

South Africa is also opposed to AFRICOM being set up in Africa.
But Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf recently declared her support for AFRICOM and offered her country to serve as AFRICOM headquarters. Sierra Leone has also supported the AFRICOM.
