Govt's attitude towards education

It is a pity that Evelyn Hone College is the latest casualty of the indefinite closures that our tertiary institutions are now accustomed to. From the outset, we want to express our dissatisfaction with the manner in which tertiary educational institutions are being run in this country. It is unimaginable that nearly all our major institutions of higher learning should go through unnecessary indefinite closures as if this were the norm.

It is becoming a matter of serious concern that nearly all the time, one of our major institutions of learning has their doors shut. If it is not the University of Zambia, it is the Copperbelt University which is closed. If it is not NRDC, it is Evelyn Hone which has its doors shut. Surely, we can do better than this. If the truth is to be told, this is a very poor record of management of our tertiary education institutions.

While we fully appreciate that some circumstances may be beyond control and there might be no other options but to close institutions, we do not think the option of unplanned indefinite closures of institutions should be encouraged. Unplanned closures are not desirable because they have consequences not only on the stability of institutions but also on students' academic progression.

Having said all that, we also believe, and as the Minister of Science and Technology Peter Daka put it when he announced the closure of Evelyn Hone last
