HARARE and Kwekwe have surpassed their normal seasonal rainfall following heavy rains that have pounded the country since December. Harare’s seasonal average is 841mm but the capital has recorded 901mm so far this season. Most parts of the country have accumulated more than 400mm of rainfall, which are, in some cases more than twice the amount they would normally record during the same period.

Chivhu also surpassed its normal seasonal rainfall earlier this month. Zinwa data and research manager Mr Elisha Madamombe said water levels in some major dams had also improved.

Zimbabwe Meteorological Services principal meteorologist Mr Hector Chikoore on Friday said the Midlands, Mashonaland East and Harare have recorded more than 600mm of rainfall.

"So far this season, most parts of the country have accumulated more than 400mm of rainfall which in some cases is more than twice the amount of rainfall they would normally record by this time. The Midlands, Mashonaland East and Harare have collected more than 600mm. The highest cumulative falls of rain have been recorded at Harare (Belvedere) 901mm, Marondera 756mm, Wedza 733mm and Kwekwe 732mm.

"A number of stations have so far surpassed their seasonal normal rainfall since the start of the season and these include Harare, Kwekwe and Chivhu. Harare has the highest percentage of normal rainfall (215 percent)," he said.

Meanwhile, the department says isolated showers and thunderstorms that are affecting the country are set to persist with generally light to moderate amounts of rainfall.

Localised heavy falls of rain are possible over the northern districts.
