Greediness, dishonesty and lack of integrity are the main causes of corruption in Zambia, Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Copperbelt community education officer Masauso Lungu has said. And Lungu said it was disheartening that thieves, crooks and corrupt people were regarded as heroes in Zambia. Addressing councillors and chief officers at the Kitwe City Council on Friday, Lungu urged Zambians to elect leaders of integrity into public offices.

He said he did not believe that poverty was the main cause of corruption because most of the people who plundered Zambia’s resources were not poor.

“Integrity is key in the fight against corruption,” Lungu said. “I think the biggest challenge is to change the mindset of Zambians to start hating corruption and change things for the better. Corruption is retrogressive and it dents the name of an institution and the country.

And Lungu said it was shameful that Zambians had continued to hero-worship crooks, thieves and corrupt people, instead of working with relevant government wings to fight corruption.

He urged Zambians to wage a vicious battle against the scourge saying the fight against corruption was not for the ACC alone, but for all patriotic Zambians who wanted to see a better country.

He said corruption was a criminal offence just like murder and any corrupt individual was not any better than a murderer.

And Kitwe Town Clerk, Ali Simwinga urged Zambians to accept that there was corruption in Zambia and then proceed to fight it effectively through joint efforts.
