CHIEF Kawaza of the Chewa people in Katete district has agreed to give part of his land to the district council for developmental purposes. And Eastern Province minister Charles Shawa has said the government will not condone inhuman and barbaric activities by traditional Nyau dancers.

Speaking when Shawa paid a courtesy call on him on Tuesday, chief Kawaza said he was ready to release part of his land to the local authority. He complained that previously he was reluctant to give land to the local authority because he was not benefiting from its investment.

Surveyors from Katete were expected to survey the land in chief Kawaza’s area.
And Shawa urged the traditional Nyau dancers to stop harassing people.

“We don’t expect these people to be attacking people because if they do so then they are tarnishing the Nyau dance which is very good and that’s why it was recognised by UNESCO as a master showpiece,” Shawa said.

He said it was sad that some people were bringing into disrepute the rich cultural dance of the Chewa people.

Shawa said this after getting reports that some traditional Nyau dancers were attacking people in senior chief Nzamane’s area.

Shawa also urged Zesco to put a three phased power line at Chiwoko Zambia National Service camp(ZNS).

“The Youth Skills Training Centre is doing very fine at Chiwoko but there is a problem of water as a result of power problems,” said Shawa.
