UNIVERSITY of Zambia (UNZA) employees yesterday declared a go-slow until the funding levels to the institution are increased. University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (UNZALARU) general secretary Dr Fenson Mwape said the workers have opposed the K74 billion allocation in the national budget and the reported K20 billion supplementary budget.
“The workers are here gathered; they are on a go-slow until more money is released and negotiations concluded,” Dr Mwape said. “The K20 billion is just a hearsay. What we hear is that the President has offered something but there is nothing in writing.”
Dr Mwape said the go-slow would have been avoided had the government listened to the employees’ demands on funding.
In a joint statement recently signed by UNZALARU, University of Zambia and Allied Workers Union and University of Zambia Professional, Technical and Senior Staff Association (UNZAPROSSA), the employees maintained that their demands must be addressed before the students report back for the new semester which commenced on April 20, 2008.
