MMD Eastern Province chairperson Kennedy Zulu has vowed that MMD will 'thrash' UNIP out of its ‘bedroom’ in next month’s Milanzi Constituency by-elections. And former Milanzi member of parliament Rose Banda has described the MMD’s adoption of Chisanga Banda as unfortunate. In an interview, Zulu said MMD would campaign vigorously to ‘deflate’ the opposition in Milanzi Constituency.
Zulu, who has been appointed as deputy campaign manager said although Milanzi was a stronghold of UNIP, MMD was not scared.
“We know that Milanzi is a bedroom for UNIP but with the adoption of Chisanga Banda, we are going to enter and thrash them out of their bedroom. We want to show them that Eastern Province is no longer for UNIP but for MMD,” said Zulu.
The MMD have adopted Banda their Eastern Province executive committee secretary.
Banda, a former Chipata Water and Sewerage company manager would now compete with Ahmed Randera for UNIP, Chimwala Phiri for UPND and Stephen Phiri for All Peoples Congress Party.
FDD and PF are yet to announce their candidates for the Milanzi seat which fell vacant after the death of Dr Chosani Njobvu. The by-elections will be held on June 26, 2008.
And Chisanga Banda accused UNIP of being responsible for the lack of development in Milanzi Constituency.
He said for the 15 years that the seat had been in UNIP hands, there had been no development as the area members of parliament were not working.
Banda said that once elected into office, he would work with the local residents in bringing development.
He said Milanzi was facing numerous problems such as erratic water supply, poor road infrastructure, and late delivery of agriculture inputs among others. Banda said he had no doubts that the MMD would scoop that seat.
