The $380 trillion Lochinvar-Marimba water pipeline, the only long-term solution to water shortages in Budiriro and Glen View is now complete, a Zinwa official has said. In an interview yesterday, Project Engineer Richard Kunyadini said a Chinese company completed the project on Tuesday.

"The project was carried out because we had noticed that some western suburbs particularly Budiriro and Glen View were getting water in odd hours like 12 midnight or 1am because the 350mm pipes which were delivering water were taking time to fill the reservoirs.

"We laid 450mm pipelines and we expect the bigger pipes to boost water deliveries to the Marimba reservoirs, which feed Budiriro and Glen View, the perennial water shortage suburbs," he said.

The project, which was funded to the tune of $380 trillion by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, had been stopped early this year because of the shortage of some material needed. Meanwhile, the desludging exercise at Firle, Crowborough and Zengeza waste-water treatment plants is almost complete. The project is seen as critical in the reduction of water pollution, inflicted on rivers by ecological accumulators from industry, agriculture, mining and partially treated sewer water.

Engineer Simon Muserere, who is in charge of the desludging project, yesterday said the exercise was expected to improve the operational capacity of the sewerage works. Contractors that are carrying out Zinwa projects have, however, called on the authority to pay them timeously to avoid delays.

"Sometimes we are forced to stop work because the authority does not pay us in time and sometimes because it does not provide us with materials needed for the projects," said one contractor.
