ZIMBABWEANS have everything to gain by retaining President Mugabe on June 27 because his vision and leadership has brought dignity to the people through empowerment and reclamation of resources, a Cabinet Minister has said. Addressing Zanu-PF ward leaders in Chinhoyi last Thursday, Politburo member Cde Webster Shamu, who is also the Minister of State for Policy Implementation, said party leaders should clearly explain to people the difference between what President Mugabe stands for and what opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai stands for.

"You the leaders should clearly explain to the people that as they vote, they know what they will be voting for.

"In President Mugabe we have a revolutionary who has stood for the people even at the risk of becoming an enemy of the West led by Britain and the US," he said.

The President, he said, stood for unity as shown by his part in fostering a united Zanu-PF and PF Zapu which has seen the country enjoying unbridled peace and development. Cde Shamu described Tsvangirai as a selfish leader who hopped from country to country, leaving his supporters without a leader.

He said even in his days as the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union secretary-general, Tsvangirai sought to protect the interests of white-owned firms.

He said Tsvangirai never worked for any meaningful empowerment of workers during his days at the ZCTU.

Cde Shamu said the West wanted to exploit Zimbabwe’s mineral wealth and President Mugabe would have been their darling if he amassed personal wealth and had offshore accounts in their capitals giving the example of the late Mobutu Se Seko whom he said plundered the wealth of the DRC with the blessing of the West.

Cde Shamu also addressed students and staff at Chinhoyi University of Technology where he was presented with students’ grievances.

He said universities should look inward before seeking outside help in running their affairs and urged CUT to make use of the university farm.

Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Zororo Muranda said there were some problems between the university and Operation Maguta but said these would be addressed and the university would be able to fully utilise the farm for the benefit of students and staff.

Zvimba South Member of the House Assembly-elect Cde Walter Chidhakwa has urged the electorate to vote for a leadership that has history and a clear plan on what course of action Zimbabwe’s development should take if the country is to remain truly independent.

Addressing a rally to drum up support for President Mugabe, Cde Chidhakwa said it was imperative that people examine the character of the opposition leadership and see whether it would advance national interests.

"President Mugabe has clearly charted the way to total independence. He has gone out of his way to make sure that ordinary Zimbabweans are empowered and benefit from the country’s abundant resources.

He said government programmes in education, health, community development, land distribution and economic empowerment had seen indigenous people claiming their rightful position on the globe.

"If you do not vote for these programmes, represented by Cde Mugabe, that would be the greatest betrayal of all time. In a related matter, the Zimbabwe National Liberation Supporters’ Association has urged people to vote for President Mugabe on June 27.

In an interview on Monday, association president Cde Collins Chipare said ex-detainees, war veterans and war collaborators were on the ground working hard to ensure President Mugabe’s victory.

"The West have always looked down on Africa and Africans as raw materials and we are telling them today that we have come of age.

"We know where we came from, where we are and where we are going. Gone are the days when we were labourers.

"The reason why we should vote for President Mugabe is that he has challenged the white world by being the first to embark on a meaningful land reform exercise in Africa," said Cde Chipare.
