MALAWIAN President Dr Bingu wa Mutharika has called for unity among Malawians if the country is to attain higher heights of development. During the country's 44th Independence anniversary in Mzuzu on Sunday, President Mutharika urged Malawians to embrace each other.

"Leaders from both the government and the opposition should cooperate in order to develop our country with one heart because there is only one Malawi but we can make this country to be a good one and we can make this country to be a bad country. Others want to make this country to be like Gehena but we should not allow it," President Mutharika said.

He said he was happy that the country had developed during his administration.

And according to Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), President Mutharika said his government would put mechanisms aimed at reducing poverty.

He said the country's good agricultural and financial policies had attracted a lot of donor support.

President Mutharika said the country had been recording bumper harvests after the government introduced fertiliser subsidy programmes to the farmers.

He said he would ensure the price of fertiliser was reduced so that peasant farmers could access the commodity.
President Mutharika said the government's target was to develop both rural and urban areas of the country.

He further said he was disappointed with opposition members of parliament who refused to debate the 2008 budget in Parliament.
He said the opposition members of parliament were hampering development by boycotting debates on the budget.

President Mutharika said the country's constitution allows the members of parliament to pass the budget and that even those that had boycotted should rescind their decision.

Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP), which together form a majority in Parliament, want to remove the lawmakers that defected to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) under a constitutional provision that bans floor-crossing before they can debate the budget.
