OPPOSITION Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) Copperbelt chairman Teddy Kangwa has said the proposal that party vice-president Chifumu Banda takes over from Edith Nawakwi has excited some members.

In an interview in Kitwe, Kangwa said the proposal would be discussed at the party's forthcoming mid-term convention.

Kangwa said Nawakwi was still the FDD president and that she had been quiet because she was nursing her son.

"I must say there have been some proposals that Banda should take over the leadership of the party from Nawakwi. The general membership of FDD are happy and excited about these proposals, but as you know FDD is a democratic party so we have to go for a convention to elect a new leader.

We are not like other political parties who just appoint individuals to positions of leadership," Kangwa said.

He said the party was strong on the Copperbelt and would soon start identifying candidates for parliamentary and local government seats ahead of the 2011 elections.
