FINANCE minister Ng'andu Magande has applied to be considered as MMD presidential candidate for the forthcoming presidential by-election. And MMD deputy national secretary Jeff Kaande yesterday said Katele Kalumba would not contest the MMD presidency. In a letter dated August 25, 2008 and addressed to MMD national secretary Kalumba, Magande stated that he considered himself eminently qualified to represent the MMD in the by-election.

“I refer to the announcement made to the NEC members that you are now receiving applications from the bona fide members of the MMD party who wish to be considered for adoption as a Presidential candidate,” Magande stated.

“I hereby apply to be considered by the MMD party as a candidate for the Presidential by-elections due in November, 2008. With my rich experience in managing state operations both internationally and locally, I consider myself eminently qualified to represent the MMD party in the forthcoming presidential by-elections.”

And in an interview, Kaande said Kalumba made it clear during the last national executive committee (NEC) meeting that he would not contest the presidency.

Asked if people like former vice-president pastor Nevers Mumba would be allowed to apply, Kaande said people were free to apply but NEC shall scrutnise their applications.

Health minister Dr Brian Chituwo said he would file in his application for the presidency today. Dr Chituwo said he shared in President Mwanawasa's successes and would want to continue with his programmes.

“I believe that when people are expressing desire for continuity, my humble contribution is that, that will indeed be my manifesto,” said Dr Chituwo.

Former works and supply minister Dr Ludwig Sondashi also said he would file in his application letter today because he rated himself highly enough to win the MMD presidency.

MMD national chairman Michael Mabenga said he would not contest the presidency because he wanted to unite the party. Foreign affairs minister Kabinga Pande refused to comment on whether he would contest the presidency.

“You have to wait for the applications,” said Pande.

Lusaka businessman Geoffrey Mwamba popularly known as GBM said he would not apply because his focus was on the 2011 presidency.

The MMD has asked members wishing to contest the party presidency to lodge in their application letters before August 26 with the secretariat.

Party spokesperson Benny Tetamashimba said the NEC would sit on September 5 to elect a presidential candidate for the by-election to be held in less than 90 days.

I solumnly declare, that my candidacy will mean more of the same.

How about some creativity and imagination?

I will run, because I am good enough to run. Very inspiring.
