PRINCESS Nakatindi Wina has advised Zambians not to abuse modern fashion by wearing 'indecent' clothes. In an interview yesterday, Princess Nakatindi said she had observed that most ladies and gentlemen nowadays wore indecent clothes under the pretext of fashion.

"We shouldn't be cheated by modern attires. Even the modern attires have got their respective time of wearing them. We cannot expect a lady or even a gentleman to put on a bikini when she or he goes to church. A bikini is for swimming, a night dress is for the night, a wedding dress is for the wedding day and a black dress in most cases is for funerals," Princess Nakatindi explained.

"In England where I was trained and educated half of my life, people wear clothes according to the occasion. If you go for a football match you can put on nice slacks, you can put on casual wear, even a cap but you don't have to go naked. When you go swimming, you can put on a bikini but you can't go swimming in a long dress or an evening dress or a wedding dress. That doesn't befit the occasion."

She urged married women and elderly men to set good examples for their children and society in general

"The adage goes: 'Everything has got its own time'. So has dressing. If you dress with breasts bare in public, what will happen if a man rapes you? And what example are you giving to your children, your grandchildren or even your husband or the general public? It's not only indecent but it is immoral and not African," Princess Nakatindi said. "Dressing like that is abuse of fashion and ignorance. Nowadays, I have seen many ladies wearing attires which are not befitting the occasion even when they go to meetings or offices."

She said although she would want to advise ladies that do not dress according to the occasion, she was afraid that they would not heed her advice because some of them were arrogant.

"In my case, short of telling them that what you are wearing is not befitting for the occasion, I just shake my head because if you advise certain people, they will even insult you and even call you names. 'Who do you think you are?'" said Princess Nakatindi. "I think we have to learn how to dress, we have to respect ourselves. We should not set a bad example."
