NATIONAL Constitutional Conference (NCC) chairperson Chifumu Banda has said there is absolutely no political threat to the NCC irrespective of who takes over the leadership of Zambia. In an interview, Banda said all well meaning Zambians should honour the late President Levy Mwanawasa by ensuring that the constitution was delivered.

"I don't see any political threat to the NCC," said Banda. "First, it was created by an Act of Parliament. If people want to change it they have to change the law where they get majority support. If you look at Parliament, the MMD are in majority. Unless they change their policy, but I don't see them changing it."

Recently, Kasama Central Patriotic Front (PF) member of parliament Saviour Chishimba withdrew from the NCC.

Chishimba said his participation in the NCC was based on the understanding that late President Mwanawasa was principled enough to deliver a constitution that would stand the test of time.

"Now that he has died, I find it very difficult to continue my membership with the NCC amidst uncertainties because the Act has got provisions which empower a sitting President to stop the process at any time," said Chishimba.
