SECONDARY School Teachers Union of Zambia (SESTUZ) members on the Copperbelt have demanded payment of their five months fixed band housing allowances before October 30, 2008. The teachers have also asked the provincial executive to urgently convene the provincial council so that the matter could be dealt with.

Speaking on behalf other members, Luanshya district SESTUZ chairman Davis Chavula said members in the province had not received their fixed band housing allowances for five months now.

"Each teacher is supposed to receive K450,000 per month," said Chavula.
He blamed the SESTUZ provincial secretariat for failing to push the matter forward.
"We want this money to be paid to the teachers before the October 30, by-election," he said.

Chavula said teachers had been de-motivated and were even reluctant to teach.
When contacted for comment, SESTUZ provincial secretary Osward Matandiko said the district leaders had not officially complained about the matter.

Meanwhile, some teachers in Kitwe who were recruited in 2007 have complained over non-payment of settlement allowances by the government.

The teachers said they were last given K575,000 while their colleagues in other provinces were given about K3.3 million each as settling-in allowance.

"We are told that only teachers who were recruited in 2002 up to 2006 will be paid their settling allowance. But this is very unfair," said one of the teachers on condition of anonymity.

He said teachers were disappointed with the discrimination shown by the government in the payment of settling-in allowances.
