JUSTICE minister George Kunda has said the rule of law will have no meaning without access to justice. And Legal Aid Board chairman Justice Essau Chulu has called on co-operating partners to work with the government in the provision of legal aid services. Speaking when he handed over nine vehicles to the Legal Aid Board on Friday, Kunda said weak institutional capacities denied vulnerable people access to justice.
Kunda said the government would create an effective and efficient legal and service delivery in the country.
He said the Legal Aid Board lacked resources to effectively carry out its mandate, which resulted in poor people being denied justice.
“It is the desire of the government to ensure there is an effective justice system in the country,” Kunda said.
He called on people in the rural areas to take advantage of the services of the Legal Aid Board to get empowered with information and education concerning their legal rights.
And Justice Chulu said co-operating partners should partner with government in the provision of legal aid services for the rule of law to be realised.
“There can be no rule of law in a country were there is no access to justice for all. We will do well to join hands to ensure that the majority of our citizens access justice” he said.
Justice Chulu said an effective and efficient legal aid service ensures that the rule of law prevails.
