HARARE Metropolitan Province has embarked on an extensive audit in the capital to establish how urban land is being utilized with stands found to be held for speculative purposes being repossessed by government.

This comes after Chitungwiza, Epworth and Ruwa presented applications for land for expansion programmes, but audits will be carried out throughout the province to establish whether land is being used efficiently.

The newly appointed Governor and Resident Minister for the Harare province, David Karimanzira, said it is suspected that a lot of land is being held for speculative purposes amid reports that some stands might have been purchased as far back of 1923.

A lot of underdeveloped stands have also been purchased by absentee landlords located outside of Zimbabwe currently residing overseas in the United Kingdom and the US. Many stands remain undeveloped years after they have been purchased as the owners have either failed to, or delayed, start construction work.

Karimanzira said the audit will seek to trace owners of land that has been lying idle adding that in some instances, some landowners had died a long time ago, but the registry was not aware of their death.
