DEAR EDITOR – The new Speaker of Parliament, Lovemore Moyo was used by the Labour Party to repair the damaged image of British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown at the party’s conference this week.

Brown whose party is currently trailing behind the Conservatives in the opinion polls is looking for anything and anyone to help boost his waning popularity. Unfortunately, the MDC-T National Chairman has been used as a bait in this process and has irreparably damaged his standing as an impartial individual. The timing was wrong, the speech lacked depth and the invitation was unjustifiable.

The MDC-T party leadership should now stop speaking like they are in the opposition. They have signed a deal to share power and hence should act accordingly.

Moyo was very embarrassing to say the least and the comments from UK’s Metro newspaper and the online publication politics.co.uk show that even the British were taken by surprise by these comments. Rallying behind, and praising Gordon Brown at a time when his political fortunes have zeroed show a lack of judgment on the part of the new Speaker and his credentials could well be in tatters right now. How is he going to face the House when it convenes next month knowing that he has played the part of an imperial agent?

One of the most pathetic quotations for this year has got to come from the new Speaker. He said to Brown: “We look to our friends and comrades around the world… to help us rebuild our institutions. Prime minister, your international leadership and support for democracy in Africa will always be celebrated. Thank you."

So Gordon Brown is their “friend and comrade”? That Moyo can support a man who spends billions of pounds on an illegal war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and leaves Zimbabweans suffering under illegal sanctions, is astounding! Brown and US President George W. Bush have spent more on the war in the Middle East than is needed to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and Make Poverty History, yet the MDC-T National Chairman thanks Brown for his “international leadership”. What planet has this man been on? Surely we are not reading from the same historical and current affairs script. I wonder what type of leadership we will have in Zimbabwe if this man was left to have his way.

I urge all Zimbabweans to shun such behaviour and start speaking in the spirit of the unity agreement signed earlier this month. The Speaker should revisit history books to understand the role the British have played in destabilizing our lands in history and in the present.
