LETTERS - Rupiah Banda, Mike Mulongoti

Unipist tacticts
By Clergyman

The presidential by-election campaigns leave a lot to be desired. In particular, I refer to Vice-President Rupiah Banda's visit to Kaoma for a rally. I could not believe my eyes reading in The Post (4/10/08) about how pupils were told to leave class just to go and cheer greedy politicians and satisfy their selfish interests.

It is unacceptable in this day and age to disturb pupils just to come and cheer a presidential campaign team when exams are around the corner for the half-prepared pupils. The provincial or district education authorities need to investigate, if not to be investigated, for allowing such a move and be made to account for the occurrence.

Pupils in rural areas are doing their best to show up for school and most of them walk several kilometres just to learn, only to be diverted to unproductive, archaic and unpalatable political whims!

The Vice-President needs to apologise to the nation and not to take his position for granted. He is not yet Republican president and his fate is in the hands of Zambians on October 30.

No wonder people are finding it hard to believe that he has really given up being Unipist. These are the same tactics the Vice- President was used to in the Kaunda era.

RB, please prove yourself and de-link yourself from your old Unipist tacticts. This is modern Zambia and the year is 2008. Hello!

Parading pupils to sing for Rupiah
By Reason Haamukonka,Kapiri
Monday October 06, 2008 [04:00]

The parading of pupils to sing and chant MMD slogans for Vice-President Rupiah Banda was nonsensical. It shows how pupils will be commanded for political ends when RB comes to power just like in the UNIP days.

How could they do this? Why use pupils to chant for him? This shows that the people of Western Province don't support the MMD. We need change.
It's time for youths to give our votes to a leader who will bring change and responsibility to people of Zambia.

Mulongoti: a danger to democracy
By Oliver Haantanda,Chipata
Monday October 06, 2008 [04:00]

I have always been baffled by information minister Mike Mulongoti's outbursts.
The man speaks as if he exists only to invite rebuke from the rest of the populace. He is always dressing down everyone in the most demeaning of tones.
He is at it again, threatening to close The Post if it does not cooperate with the government. Come on Mulongoti, slow down!

I have no problem with Mulongoti trying to preserve his job if Rupiah wins but he is going too far in his threats and becoming a danger to democracy.

Threats on The Post
By Concerned citizen

When did Mike Mulongoti’s head grow so big?
Does he know that he is just a dot in this country?
Mulongoti should realise that he doesn’t own Zambia and has no right to close The Post.
If he is not impressed with the way The Post reports, then he should stop buying their publications. Sorry he doesn’t buy, he is entitled to free copies and he’s used to it.

I think he is just amazed that the paper is able to bring out issues that ZNBC and the Times of Zambia are unable to; issues like the brown envelopes at Government House, the use of government resources (helicopters and police vehicles) in their campaigns and how Rupiah Banda bribed some people in 1991.

Mulongoti's reasoning
By Concerned citizen
Sunday October 05, 2008 [04:00]

I have always suspected that there was something wrong in the way Mike Mulongoti reasons. How can a person who knows The Post's history to fight to the bitter end any attempts to muzzle press freedom suggest he can close it? Do some people ever learn? Where would Mulongoti be without the information that The Post has provided the citizens for almost two decades?

What a joke we have for a government spokesman. Can someone please pump some sense in this man
In solidarity.
