THE South African government has budgeted for 300 million rands to help Zimbabwe purchase agricultural inputs. And Zimbabwean Ambassador to South Africa Dr Simon Khaya Moyo has urged Zimbabwean farmers to prove their worth. South African Minister of Finance, Trevor Manuel recently announced the inputs package in his mid-term budget.

He said South Africa hoped that the 300 million rands (about US$30 million) would help in meeting neighbouring Zimbabwe’s short-term food requirements. South African technocrats from the Department of Agriculture recently met their Zimbabwean counterparts to assess the requirements.

And in statement, Zimbabwean Ambassador to South Africa Dr Simon Khaya

Moyo expressed gratitude with the development.

“This development is a clear demonstration of the cordial and solid relations existing between Zimbabwe and South Africa at all levels,” Dr stated Moyo. “We must maintain this unity of purpose as indeed and as often stated, we are one people, sharing a common liberation history, culture and destiny. Let those in the farming sector prove their worth, for this farming season must mark the turning point in our economic recovery strategies.”

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki promised to help Zimbabwe in agriculture after the country’s political leaders signed their power-sharing deal on September 15.
