MDC snubs a meeting they called for, how illogical

DEAR EDITOR – The Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai has snubbed a meeting by the Troika of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) which he called for. How logical, or illogical.

I was reading statements from the MDC party last week during the all-party talks and realised that the MDC party’s spokesman, Nelson Chamisa and Morgan Tsvangirai, that party’s leader, were the ones calling for the Sadc to intervene in the powersharing talks.

“We have referred the matter to Sadc, the guarantors in this process,” said Chamisa last week. The same statement was echoed by the MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai at a rally in Highfields.

It is amazing that these people would snub a meeting they called for. Also only last week they were calling on former South African President Mbeki to come back and facilitate the process.

The MDC should realise that there can never be a time when the whole Sadc region will convene a general panel to discuss Zimbabwe. This is a misunderstanding of the procedures of the regional organisation. The region will always have to appoint an individual to facilitate the talks. That individual, as Justice Minister Patrick Chinamasa said, will only facilitate the process, but will never force Zimbabweans to adopt a position.

That means the real solution will have to be found through discussions by Zimbabweans.

The MDC cannot expect the whole country to suffer because of their naked ambition. What is it they want to attain by controlling the Ministry of Home Affairs? That ministry will not bring food to the table for millions of Zimbabweans who are suffering under the sanctions regime promoted and supported by the MDC.

The MDC should now tell the Zimbabwean people what their real agenda is! It is definitely not to repair the economy of the country – but to seek retribution for violence they agreed they had also taken part in.

The MDC party will never have the aspirations of the Zimbabwean people at heart and will never deliver for them.

Isn’t it true that the MDC-T party expected to completely take over the administration of the country and never bargained for power-sharing? Now they are placed in a corner and with Morgan as Prime Minister (not President) the party will not be able to appease all the groups that supported them all these years.

America and Britain invested heavily in the MDC and are not about to lose everything.

Morgan realises that as Prime Minister, he will be constrained by his position and his finances will be scrutinised much more closely. He feels secure criticising President Mugabe from the touchlines than working as Prime Minister. Rightly so, the man feels comfortable criticizing, not delivering, and the prospect of high office is now taking a toll on him – especially surrounded by more learned and more skilled people.
