SOUTHERN African Centre for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) executive director Lee Habasonda has urged the next government to work with the losing presidential candidates so as to enhance unity in the country.
And Habasonda hoped that the next government will move away from regional politics in its selection of Cabinet ministers. In an interview yesterday, Habasonda said failure by the incoming President to embrace the losing candidates would promote divisions amongst leaders and derail progression of developmental programmes, a situation he described as sad.
"Our advice is that whoever wins should immediately reach out to the losing candidates to enhance unity, let them bury their differences. He should also include opposition leaders in his Cabinet to close up the gaps. As you have seen from the way election results, are pouring in, it is evident that the voting pattern is the same as the one in 2006 elections meaning regional politics is still the order of the day," he said.
Habasonda noted that there was need to move away from regionalised politics if the country was to see change as regards the voting pattern.
Habasonda also expressed concern at the delay in announcing election results, saying there was need for the Zambians to know the outright winner.
