FORMER Kitwe mayor Patrick Tembo was on Thursday detained by police in Kitwe's Kamfinsa Constituency for allegedly ferrying MMD cadres to various polling stations and distributing mealie-meal.

In an interview, Tembo confirmed the development but said police just interrogated him after PF cadres raised alarm that he was distributing mealie-meal and ferrying cadres.

"It was PF cadres who started the whole issue, they suspected that I was carrying MMD cadres to go and vote and that I was distributing mealie-meal to them.

“How can I do that at my status, this is not my first time to vote," he said.

Tembo explained that police interrogated him for about one hour, adding that no charge was slapped on him.

Former Kamfinsa Constituency member of parliament Webby Chipili helped secure Tembo's release.

"Mr Chipili just sought for clarification from police over my matter," said Tembo.

Kitwe district police commanding officer Andrew Litwayi could neither confirm no deny the matter.

"We have not yet received that report, we will follow up the matter," he said.

Meanwhile, police in Mpongwe detained a 27-year-old woman who voted using her sister's documents.

Mpongwe district electoral officer Moses Kamocha named the girl as Christine Mwansa of St Joseph Ibenga.

Kamocha said the woman used the National Registration Card (NRC) and voters card of her sister Mary Musanga.

Kamocha said the woman is detained at Mpongwe polling station.

"We have another incident where a gentleman was picked up by police for attempting to vote using another persons documents," he said.

He said police had followed up the matter and are making necessary investigations.
