THE Economics Association of Zambia (EAZ) and National Assembly yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding that will focus on building capacity for members of parliament and staff in economic affairs and the budgetary process.

During the signing ceremony at Parliament Buildings in Lusaka, Clerk of the National Assembly Doris Mwiinga said the support from EAZ would contribute significantly to enhancing the quality of debate in the house and the manner in which the budgets would be scrutinized.

“The support under the agreement we are signing today will continue with that focus and two workshops are already scheduled for January 2009 for MPs and staff and these workshops will be held in preparation for scrutiny of the 2009 budget,” Mwiinga said.

She said the National Assembly was also currently implementing the capacity building component under the parliamentary reform programme phase three with cooperating partners.

“The objective of this component is to contribute to the development of the institutional, human and operational capacities of MPs and the staff of the National Assembly,” said Mwiinga.

“I wish to state that our agreement with EAZ is in no way a duplication of efforts. The support that will be provided by EAZ will compliment the activities being undertaken under the capacity building component of the parliamentary reforms programme phase three.”

And EAZ president Mwilola Imakando said the institution through its mandate would continue to foster economic growth through promotion and implementation of sound policies.
