ZIMBABWE’S major dams are now more than 85 percent full, almost halfway through the rainy season as significant inflows continue.
The latest Zinwa state of major dams report shows that Harare’s major dams — Chivero, Manyame, Seke and Harava — now hold on average of about 85,9 percent of their capacity.
Manyame is 87 percent full, Chivero 85,9 percent and Mazvikadei 93,8 percent.
Odzani and Smallbridge are 90,3 percent full while Ngezi is 88,1 percent full.
Other dams include Mutirikwi (79,4 percent), Rusape (98 percent), Bangazaan (86,8 percent), Nyatare (97,4 percent), Manyuchi (80,2 percent) and Jumbo (77,3 percent).
It is now envisaged that the majority of the country’s dams will spill long before the end of the rainy season, which normally lasts until early April.
Most catchment areas have recorded satisfactory levels of inflows with the highest, Manyame catchment, now 90 percent full.
Gwayi catchment has several dams that are more than 60 percent full, but has the least level of combined capacity at 57,6 percent.
A total of 39 of the 53 dams are used for irrigation while others are for water supply, industry and mining.
Dziva Dam in Sanyati has the lowest level with 18,1 percent of its capacity.
