SCIENCE and technology permanent secretary Dr Buleti Nsemukila has urged technical and vocational institutions to focus on technical courses that encourage the economy to grow.
In an interview yesterday, Dr Nsemukila said vocational institutions had begun focusing on courses that the private sector was also offering and that the trend was creating a gap in the economy.
"I think as you have seen, we have seen some investors bringing in artisans from outside the country when actually our institutions should be training those artisans," he said.
"What we have seen is our institutions are also shifting towards business courses when actually most private institutions are doing business so in the end we are having a gap in the economy."
Dr Nsemukila said the government would not like to see a shift in focus to other courses because this would create gaps.
He, however, said this did not mean that other courses should be abandoned.
And Dr Nsemukila said it was not true that the government would not be offering bursaries to needy students at Evelyn Hone College.
"I was approached by some students from Evelyn Hone, some students who were informed by their management that the government is not sponsoring bursary anymore which was not actually correct," said Dr Nsemukila.
He said his ministry had since asked the Evelyn Hone management to withdraw the statement because it was not correct.
