ELEVEN people have died while 21 have been injured when the minibus they were on in yesterday collided with a truck near Ngwerere turn-off in Lusaka.
A check at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) found the dead bodies being taken to the mortuary while survivors were being attended to.

Among the injured was a child who has been admitted to the intensive care unit.

Police spokesperson Bonny Kapeso said the accident involved a Mitsubishi Rossi registration number AAR 8678 Lsk 11, roadmaster and a truck from Zimbabwe registration number B248 which had two trailers B903 AAV and B909 AAV.

Kapeso said the accident occurred around 12:00 hours as the minibus tried to overtake three vehicles and in turn collided head-on with the truck near Ngwerere turn-off.

The minibus was coming from Ndola.

He said among the dead were four female adults, five male adults and two male children aged nine and 14.

Kapeso said the minibus driver had not yet been identified as he was on the run while the driver of the truck sustained some injuries, had been identified as Nyamwanza Gwinyai.

And according to one of the injured passengers, Davie Musakanya, the bus driver wanted to overtake the long convoy.

"We were approaching Kabango, about a kilometre from the roadblock. There was a convoy of vehicles and it was as if the cars were almost stopping, but our driver was going at full speed. He tried to overtake the cars and that's when the truck came. The truck tried to avoid him but the two vehicles collided and we found ourselves all over," said Musakanya.
