Teta urges local authorites to upgrade status

MINISTER of Local Government and Housing, Benny Tetamashimba says he would encourage local authorities to upgrade their status.

Mr Tetamashimba said in an interview yesterday that he would gladly accept proposals from local authorities and after assessing them, make recommendations to President Banda.

A few years ago, former Minister of Local Government and Housing, Sylvia Masebo suspended the upgrading of local authorities saying they did not have the necessary amenities needed for a new status.

“I will not come in the way of any council which feels it is ready to be upgraded. There will be no blanket restriction on any local authority to be upgraded as long as I am satisfied with the proposal and the President agrees to it, that particular sub boma or district will be upgraded,” he said.

He said Kabwe District Council wanted to be upgraded and it is one of the oldest towns in Zambia. He added that if Government deemed it necessary, the move to upgrade Kabwe would not be blocked.

He said Solwezi was another town which had seen an increase in activity with the opening of Lumwana and other mines in the area. He said there would probably be need to upgrade the district in the near future.

Mr Tetamashimba said President Mwanawasa had once indicated that he wanted to upgrade Mwembeshi, which currently fell under Mumbwa District, because it has the necessary amenities.

He said upgrading of local authorities was one way of making people go back to their villages.
