DMMU to spend K162m on water tanks in cholera-affected areas

THE Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) for Lusaka will spend K162 million on 18 new water tanks in areas affected by cholera. Chairperson for the district disaster committee Christah Kalulu disclosed this during the weekly press briefing at the DMMU offices.

Kalulu said six water tanks would be erected in Kanyama and Chawama, four in Chibolya and one in Kuku and Misisi.

She said the committee had so far managed to control the cholera situation because they had recorded relatively stable number of cholera cases.

Kalulu said they have embarked on an aggressive campaign to ensure that people in the cholera-affected areas accessed clean water.

She said in the area of health alone, the committee had spent over K500 million which was used on clearing the drainages and also on disinfectants.

Kalulu called on people to provide hygiene for their families by boiling water and disposing of waste matter in the right places.

And private school teachers in Chibolya yesterday staged a peaceful protest demanding that education minister opens the schools in the cholera-affected areas.

The teachers said they would resume work tomorrow despite the ministry of educations’ directive to have schools closed in the cholera-affected areas.

“Tomorrow, we are opening schools because we have families and private schools are not like government schools where they are entitled to salaries even when there are no school fees from the pupils,” one of the teachers complained.
