Malawi government will further reduce the prices of fertiliser on the local market due to the reduction in prices of the same on the global market, Secretary for Agriculture and Food Security Andrew Daudi has said.

Daudi said that his office had monitored the lowering trend of landing prices in the ports of Durban in South Africa and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania.

"We intend to take advantage of the situation on the global market and purchase fertiliser for both commercial and subsidy programme as soon as possible," he said.

He said this time around the prices of fertiliser on the local market would not exceed MK5000 (US$36 per 50 kg bag compared to the last prices of between MK10, 000 (US$72) to MK11, 000 (US$75) per 50 kg bag.

He said worldwide the prices of fertiliser also have gone down by two thirds. Therefore, the total cost of subsidy programme this season would come down in the country.

Last season, he said, the government spent MK232, 000 (US$1,600) per tonne but this time around it would spend only MK 87,000 (US$600).--APA
