Mutharika elevates Chikowi to Paramount Chief

President Bingu Wa Mutharika has elevated Senior Chief Chikowi, who has all along been in the forefront in promoting the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to Paramount Chief with immediate effect.

Mutharika told people who gathered at Michongwe Primary School in Machinga on Sunday that he has also elevated T/As Nyambi and Chimwala of Machinga and Mangochi districts to Senior Chiefs.

Mutharika said he had decided to elevate Senior Chief Chikowi to Paramount Chief because has been loyal to his government for a long time.

"I have decided to promote Senior Chief Chikowi due to his loyalty and hardworking spirit. He has remained loyal to my government and myself and for this he has to be rewarded. He deserves kudos for his loyalty," said Mutharika, amid applause from party faithful.

Chikowi has become the first paramount chief among the Yao tribe in the country.

Chikowi has been a DPP stooge since 2006 after President Mutharika pardoned him following a conviction by Zomba Magistrate Court over theft of coupons for subsidized fertilizer.

He was saved from a serving a jail sentence.

Two months ago, he issued out a directive banning opposition parties from holding rallies in his area.
