THE Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has dismissed utterances by Deputy Prime Minister, Prof. Arthur Mutambara calling on all businesses to disregard the National Budget presented this month and the Monetary Policy Statement presented in January.

Professor Mutambara told a round table of chief executive officers to disregard the two documents and wait for new statements.

The RBZ Governor, Dr. Gideon Gono immediately released a statement saying the National Budget and MPS had legal effect, and the Deputy PM could not nullify them.

Dr. Gono said the MPS is issued in terms of Section 46 of the RBZ Act chapter 22:15 and the National Budget is consistent with Chapter XI, Section 103(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“The Monetary Policy Statement I issued remains the legitimate and only Monetary Policy Statement that this economy and its stakeholders must obey and work with," said Dr. Gono.

“As Governor, I have not received any formal indications from the Presidium, Premiership and the ministerial committees, industry or from anyone else regarding improvements that need to be made.

“Ordinarily, there is room for policy enhancement, such enhancements must be done in an orderly and professional manner, with the singular objective of being constructive in the public interest, as opposed to deliberately engaging in destructive pronouncement,” Dr Gono added.

DR GONO'S JOB SECURE

The Prime Minister, Morgan Tsvangirai has warned against individuals wishing to 'crucify' Dr. Gono by calling for his ouster.

Asked whether Dr. Gono will remain in his position within the inclusive Government, Tsvangirai said his performance will be evaluated and his role at the RBZ appraised at the appropriate time.

Tsvangirai said: "In due course, we will evaluate his performance, his role. I have heard people try to crucify him; at the appropriate time a decision will be made."
