THREE Chinese nationals have been arrested at Ndola International Airport for being in possession of Ivory products in violation of the Zambia Wildlife Act.

Zambia Wildlife Authority (ZAWA) director general Dr Lewis Saiwana confirmed the arrest of the three Chinese nationals who have since been released on police bond pending appearance in the Kalulushi Magistrate Court.

Dr Saiwana named the Chinese as Yu Kung, Xu Qin Chin and Zhan, employees of Turner Construction Company in Kitwe.

ÒOn Friday 13th March, 2009 at Ndola International Airport, three Chinese nationals were apprehended and later arrested for being found in possession of prescribed trophy contrary to the precepts of the Zambia Wildlife Act number 12 of 1998,Ó Dr Saiwana stated.

He also stated that a fourth Chinese national, Chen Jibin of CGC Construction, was arrested for being in possession of Elephant ivory products and was charged with being in possession of government trophy contrary to the law.

ÒIn this case, the suspect was exporting Ivory products via registered Zampost mails noted as Literature or animal bone. He had exported a number of consignments before one was intercepted at the Lusaka International Airport,Ó stated Saiwana.
