THE Zambia Meteorological Department (ZMD) has reported increased rainfall activity in Kawambwa district of Luapula Province, which has resulted in the submerging of crop fields.
According to the ZMD Weather Bulletin, the eastern part of Kawambwa district recorded continuous rainfall, while most other stations around the country registered below normal rainfall patterns.
Kalomo and Lundazi particularly recorded significantly below normal rainfall. During the dekad running to March 10, most parts of the country were expected to experience an increase in rainfall activities.
On the prevailing agrometeorological conditions, the department stated that maize crops had attained the advanced grain filling stage.
“The general picture countrywide indicates that maize crops have attained advanced grain filling stage. The dekad saw a reduction in rainfall activities and many days of sun intervals as evident by the reduction in number of rain days. In areas where water storage capacity is poor, wilting of maize crops have been experienced,” stated the ZMD.
