FORMER finance deputy minister Jonas Shakafuswa has said there is nothing wrong with Zambia giving money to Zimbabwe on humanitarian grounds. In an interview, Shakafuswa however said Zimbabweans had to be reminded that Zambia spent too much during their liberation struggle.

“There is nothing wrong with giving them [Zimbabwe] money but they have to learn to appreciate because after we spent so much on them during the liberation struggle and when their economy was doing fine, they used to look down on us,” Shakafuswa said.

He said at the rate Zambia was going, it was possible for the country to find itself in a similar situation that Zimbabwe is in.

Shakafuswa however, said he did not know where the money to bail out Zimbabwe would come from because Zambia had a tight budget.

“I don’t know where the money would from come because our budget is tight, but I think there will be need to cut on unnecessary trips or may be get something from the Constituency Development Funds (CDF),” Shakafuswa said.

He further said Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe should learn to appreciate.

“The problems that are currently going on in Zimbabwe are as a result of Mugabe’s bad leadership. When Zimbabwe was liberated with the help of Zambia, those people used to look down on us when we used to go to their country, so I think there is need for Mugabe to learn to say thank you,” said Shakafuswa.

Zimbabwe says it needs in excess of about $10 billion to rebuild its economy.

Recently during the SADC meeting, member countries resolved to give some monetary assistance to Zimbabwe for it to rebuild its economy.
