Hikaumba welcomes RB, unionists meeting
By Times Reporter

ZAMBIA Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) president Leonard Hikaumba has commended President Rupiah Banda for agreeing to meet the labour movement to discuss various issues affecting workers.

Mr Hikaumba said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that the union was ready for the meeting with the Head of State and was just waiting for a date to be set.

“We are ready and are just waiting to get the actual date. We have wanted to have this meeting for a long time,” he said.

President Banda on Saturday said that he was anxious to meet the labour movement to discuss various challenges the country was faced with as they were important players in the economy.

Mr Hikaumba, during this year’s Labour Day celebrations, requested for an audience with Mr Banda so that the unions could air their views and grievances.

He said that the meeting would, among many issues, look at matters affecting the workers in the wake of the global financial crisis and other outstanding issues between the union and the Government.

He, however, refused to give specifics of the meeting saying he did not want to pre-empt the details of the meeting.
