A ZIMBABWEAN magistrates’ court on Saturday convicted an Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) legislator of kidnapping and remanded him in custody after dismissing his bail application.

Mutare West Legislator Shuwa Mudiwa now awaits sentencing next Saturday. The MDC-T party's regional spokesperson Pishayi Muchaurawa, told RadioVOP in an interview that Mudiwa's bail application had been dismissed.

"What that means is that they are sending him to the Mutare Remand Prison where he will await his sentence next week," he said.

The state said that Mudiwa abducted a Zanu PF supporter, a girl, sometime in November 2007, but he denies all the charges.

If Mudiwa is sentenced to more than six months in prison he automatically loses his seat in the legislature. His constituency will therefore face a by-election at a time determined by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.
