ALLIED Timber Holdings has embarked on a firewood project that is set to empower urban women to save at least 400 000 hectares of tree cover and reduce deforestation. The project will be run in conjunction with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Gender and Community Development involving 70 men and women from across the country.

The participants recently underwent a one-day training on the different needs of the industry. Sales will be conducted from 45 pilot centres around the country. The project comes in the wake of calls to rigorously monitor the process of reforestation.

Early this year Environment and Natural Resources Management Minister Francis Nhema, said it was the duty of every citizen to plant trees to avoid climate change.

Between 1990 and 2005 the country has lost 21,1 percent forest cover, he said.

At a ceremony to officially launch the firewood project Minister Nhema said the initiative would alleviate the shortage of energy in urban areas while helping in the conservation of forests.

Increased power cuts over the past few weeks has increased pressure on the people to look for alternative sources of energy.
