Misappropriation of funds saddens Chipata mayor
Written by Christopher Miti in Chipata
CHIPATA mayor Malvern Zulu says the council would seal all the loopholes that were used by some employees to misapply colossal amounts of money.
In an interview on Friday, Zulu said it was unfortunate that the council had discovered that there was misappropriation of funds by council workers.
He said the council was a public institution and it therefore needed to have the people's trust.
Zulu said money, which was misappropriated, would have been ploughed back to the people through service delivery and not personal gain.
He said certain sectors of the council would have suffered because of the misappropriation of the funds.
Zulu who said he could not give an exact amount which was misappropriated since the investigations were still going on, said the misappropriated funds could go beyond K20 million.
On Tuesday town clerk Golden Banda said the council had suspended six employees implicated in the alleged misappropriation of council funds through issuance of fake receipts and other dubious means.
Banda said the misappropriation of funds were discovered after the council engaged an auditor to go through the books.
The town clerk said no one would be treated as a sacred cow in the matter involving misappropriation of council funds.
