President Rupiah Banda has condemned the use of live ammunition by police in quelling disturbances that occurred at the Copperbelt University on Monday. Speaking in Kampala yesterday where he addressed Zambian residents in that country, President Banda said he was disappointed that police used live rounds of ammunitions to disperse students.

He said he did not understand why the police resorted to shooting the students instead of using other options like teargas.

“I am glad that the police commissioner is here with me, I want to know why the police used live ammunition, I am not happy at all. This report has disturbed me and spoiled my stay here in Uganda,” said President Banda.

President Banda said he was particularly disappointed to learn that the violence and riotous behavior at the University emanated from a trivial matter which involved theft of a laptop computer.

A Copperbelt University student Cornelius Mwape was shot in the lower abdomen by a police officer during the unrest and has been admitted at the Kitwe general hospital.
