THE Zimbabwe Government is currently embroiled in discussions with investors interested in mining diamonds in Marange fields, reports The Herald newspaper.

The announcement was made by Mines and Mining Development Minister Obert Mpofu on Wednesday..

Negotiations are said to have already started with several investors and a deal would soon be struck and names are currently witheld so as to avoid pre-empting the announcement.

"Government is seriously engaging investors and very soon an announcement will be made. We are talking to quite a number of people whom we want to engage as partners," he was quoted as saying.

Currently, the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation is mining diamonds in Marange.

Current mining methods are labour intensive and new investment is required in procuring state-of-the-art mining equipment.

The Herald reports that an estimated US$9 million is required to fully exploit the Chiadzwa diamond fields.

The negotiations follow recommendations by the Kimberley Diamond Processing team that mining methods at Chiadzwa needed improving to fully exploit the vast potential of diamond mining in the country.
