A YOUTH organisation has urged the Patriotic Front (PF) and UPND not to allow anything to divide their pact. Addressing a media briefing in Lusaka last Saturday, Youth Movement for Inter-party Reconciliation Coalition (YMIC) executive director Patrick Samwimbila said the PF-UPND pact had come at the right time.

"So we are grateful to you the PF and the UPND for responding to our call and indeed to the Zambian people. We wish you the best on your journey to 2011 elections and please know that Zambians are watching you, so do not allow anything to come between you and divide you because if such an unfortunate thing happens, no one shall ever forgive you," Samwimbila said.

"To the other political parties, we encourage you also to open your doors wide for discussions with other parties so that we can see more united political groupings that would create even more meaningful impact on the political scene. It should be known clearly that YMIC's interest in its promotion of political pacts or mergers is to narrow down the number of presidential candidates in 2011 in order to avoid vote splitting."

Samwimbila said the organisation was demanding that political parties adopt many youths as parliamentary and local government candidates in the 2011 elections.

"We are demanding that youths be appointed to senior government positions like ministers, permanent secretaries or to be sent in foreign missions in the next government. We are demanding a clear and workable policy on youths' empowerment funds and programmes implementation in the next budgets. We are demanding clear and workable policies that would provide quality and user friendly high school and tertiary education," said Samwimbila.
