Chiluba attacks judiciary for convicting his wife

FORMER president Frederick Chiluba (left) yesterday said God allowed President Rupiah Banda to be President to create an environment in which the judiciary would freely decide on his corruption cases. And Chiluba said it does not make legal sense that he has been acquitted, while his wife Regina, who is charged with receiving stolen property from him was found guilty by the courts.

Addressing congregants at the Bible Gospel Church in Africa (BIGOCA) in Lusaka's Matero compound yesterday, Chiluba said God had proved himself strong again through his acquittal by the magistrates’ court.

He said God, in His own mercy, made the acquittal possible and that if God were with him, no one could be against him.

"He is in charge of time... he created an environment in which the judiciary would freely decide on the matter. He allowed this by allowing Rupiah Banda to be President. How did Rupiah Banda become candidate? He was an outsider. He was even retired. He was on his farm for 20 years, no [presidential] aspirations. The NEC [national executive committee of MMD] was dominated by the family tree, and they spent a lot of money to elect themselves. Where did Bwezani in a matter of time come from to go into NEC? The hand of God," Chiluba said. "God created him to come and unify our nation. Our nation was being split. Kenneth Kaunda had a legacy of One Zambia, One Nation. But certainly after I left office, we came to know tribes, not by identification, but discrimination and isolation."

Chiluba said before the presidential elections of last year, there were some politicians who were said to be popular and that because of that President Banda would not win.

"I said we don't walk by sight, let's put faith in God. I am rising, going to Luapula to tell the people, whether they like it or not, this [Rupiah Banda] is the man," he said.
