THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has said government plans to expand the municipality area from the current 424 square kilometres to 864. Explaining the city’s Vision 2030 Master Plan, LCC public relations officer Henry Kapata said the current situation was that boundaries of Lusaka were not clearly defined.
“The current situation is that the boundaries of Lusaka are such that when you go South, Lilayi turn is the end of Lusaka and the other side is Kafue district,” he explained.
“When you go North, Zani Muone Motel is the end of Lusaka and the other side is Chibombo district council. When you go West, Garden House Motel is the end of Lusaka and the other side is Kafue district council. When you go East, the airport round-about is the end of Lusaka, the other side is Chongwe district council.”
Kapata also said the study of a comprehensive urban development plan for the city of Lusaka would be implemented by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing in collaboration with LCC and other relevant agencies.
He explained that the need for the master plan was as a result of several problematic issues such as air pollution, disorderly transportation systems, water shortages, flooding toxic and hazardous waste disposal due to the rapid industrial growth.
“In order to solve these problems, a comprehensive urban development plan including sub programmes for urban transportation, water supply and sewerage was necessary for the greater Lusaka with the target of 2030,” said Kapata.
