MINES minister Maxwell Mwale has said India’s technology and investments have contributed to Zambia’s economic growth.

During a reception to mark India’s 62nd independence anniversary in Lusaka on Saturday, Mwale said Zambia had benefited from development co-operation programmes with India in various sectors ranging from agriculture, defence, health and education.

“Others include the Konkola Deep Water Copper Mining Project (KDWMP), Itezhi-tezhi Power Corporation limited (ITPC) and Indo Zambia Bank,” Mwale said.

He said the Zambian government realised that such initiatives were of value and could strive to participate actively.

Mwale said India’s special day offered Zambia the opportunity to reaffirm common commitment to the strengthening of bilateral relations.

“To date, Zambia and India have enjoyed strong bonds of friendship which have translated into increased cooperation in various fields of mutual interest to our two countries. We look back on the warm and cordial relations that our two countries have shared over the years,” he said.

And Mwale reaffirmed the government’s support to India’s fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestation.

Mwale said Zambia knew too well how India had suffered as a result of international terrorism.

He also applauded the Indian government on the measures it was taking in ensuring peace and security at both regional and international levels.

Mwale said India played an important part in Zambia’s struggle for freedom through the support it rendered in the fight against colonialism in Africa, where leaders, particularly first president Dr Kenneth Kaunda, drew inspiration from the non-violence philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi
